Receptive & Expressive Language
What is receptive language?
Receptive language is the ability to understand or comprehend language "input". Language "input" includes both words and gestures. Receptive language is more than just vocabulary skills, it is also the ability to interpret a question as a question, the understanding of concepts like “on,” or accurately interpreting complex grammatical forms.
What is expressive language?
Expressive language means being able to put thoughts into words and sentences, in a way that makes sense and is grammatically accurate. Simply put expressive language is language "output". Expressive language is how one expresses his or her wants and needs. This includes not only words, but also the grammar rules that dictate how words are combined into phrases, sentences and paragraphs as well as the use of gestures and facial expressions.
